Who is Stockton Rush?
In San Francisco, California, Rush was born on March 31, 1962, into a prosperous family. Born to Richard Stockton Rush Jr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Ellen Rush (née Davies) of San Francisco, he was the youngest of five children. Ralph K. Davies was the grandpa of his mother. The Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco bears the name of his maternal grandmother, Louise Davies, who was also a benefactor.
He was descended from Richard Stockton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Benjamin Rush, a physician, through his father. He was interested in aviation and aquatics as a youngster, and as a child, he dreamed of becoming an astronaut and the first person on Mars. At twelve years old, he started scuba diving, and at eighteen, he became a commercial pilot. Later on, he was informed that his visual acuity would prevent him from being a military pilot.

Personal Life
In a 2022 podcast, Rush talked about his thoughts on what he considered to be too stringent safety measures with CBS writer David Pogue. “You know, at some point, safety just seems like a waste,” he stated. Don’t do anything—not even get out of bed or go in your car—if all you want is to be safe. You will have to take some risks at some time, and the decision is a risk vs return one. I believe that by violating the law, I can accomplish this just as safely.”
In 1986, Rush wed Wendy Weil, a pilot and educator. The couple has two kids. Through their daughter Minnie Straus Weil, Wendy Weil Rush is a great-great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Blun Straus, who both perished in the Titanic catastrophe. She was OceanGate’s previous director of communications. Rush had cultivated friendships with well-known businessmen like Jay Bloom, who turned down Rush’s offer to board the Titan submarine due to security concerns.

Career
Rush, a Princeton graduate, briefly worked as a flight test engineer on the F-15 program at McDonnell Douglas before earning his MBA. Afterward, he joined venture financing firm Peregrine Partners in San Francisco and later managed Remote Control Technologies in Kirkland, Washington. In 1989, he built a 4-meter submersible and developed a passion for exploring the ocean’s depths after a 2006 voyage in British Columbia. Despite trying to buy a submersible, he ended up constructing his own with a 10-meter diving depth. Rush continued his pursuit, even attempting to acquire Steve Fossett’s submersible car after Fossett died in 2007.
OceanGate
In 2007, Rush considered starting a submarine company, believing there was a demand for underwater tourism as an alternative to time-consuming scuba diving. In 2009, he co-founded OceanGate with Guillermo Söhnlein, aiming to fund new deep-diving submersibles through commercial tourism. Söhnlein left in 2013.
Rush found that public perception and strict regulations hindered the private undersea exploration industry. He criticized the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 for prioritizing safety over innovation, limiting dives below 150 feet.
In 2018, Rush led a research trip to the San Juan Islands. Despite setbacks, he launched his deep submergence company in 2021. A couple sued him in 2023 over a canceled 2018 Titanic dive but dropped the case after Rush’s passing.
Titan expedition and death
On June 18, 2023, Rush was on a journey to explore the Titanic wreck aboard the Titan, a submersible from OceanGate. Unfortunately, communication with the surface ship MV Polar Prince was lost. The United States, Canada, and France joined efforts for search and rescue operations in the air and water.
By June 22, OceanGate sadly announced that Rush and the other four passengers were believed to have been lost. This conclusion came after the discovery of a debris field about 490 meters from the Titanic’s bow. The debris indicated a catastrophic failure of the submersible’s pressure hull, causing an implosion that resulted in the immediate loss of everyone on board, as confirmed in a later news conference by the United States Coast Guard.
